13th IDPASC School

The International Doctorate Network in Particle Physics, Astrophysics and Cosmology (IDPASC, https://idpasc.lip.pt) is an interdisciplinary network whose aim is to train a new generation of high-level experts in the fields of Particle Physics, Astrophysics and Cosmology.

The 13th edition of yearly IDPASC schools is organized by the Department of Physics and Chemistry, University of Palermo, Italy in collaboration with INFN Catania and National South Laboratory (LNS), with organizational support from Laboratory of Instrumentation and Experimental Particle Physics, Portugal (LIP) and IDPASC Committee.

This school aims at training the next generation of physicists that will investigate open questions in the PASC domains in the coming decades. The school offers a multi-disciplinary approach that will help each student, which starts to specialize in one domain, to keep a broad view on the different PASC domains. This will be a key skill to optimally use the complementarity between different approaches to shed light on the same problems with a different angle such as Dark Matter, physics beyond the Standard Model or multi-messenger physics. On top of the main courses, the school will also propose some hands-on session in specific domains such as ML for PASC problems.

Studying the Quark Gluon Plasma at the LHC: current results and future plans

Collisions of heavy nuclei at high energy at the LHC provide the opportunity to study a the Quark-Gluon Plasma, a state of matter where quarks and gluons and not confined into hadrons, but are effectively free to move over larger distances in the laboratory.

In this presentation I will present highlights of the heavy-ion physics program at the LHC and discuss how the resuls allow us to determine the temperature and flow fields in the collision, as well as the transport properties of the QGP. In addition, I will outline the plans of the ALICE experiment for the upcmoning Run 3 and 4 and beyond, highlighting new capabilities for the study of the QGP that are provided by the recently installed and future detector upgrades.

1st PADOVA EXCELLENCE SCHOOL "PHYSICS OF THE UNIVERSE": MULTIMESSENGER ASTROPHYSICS

This is the first Padova Excellence School on the Physics of the Universe, organized by the Department of Physics and Astronomy (DFA) of the University of Padova.

The goal of this first edition is to offer graduate students and young researchers an updated and comprehensive view of MultiMessenger Astrophysics, Astronomy and Cosmology.

The recent years were marked by huge advancements in this field, with breakthrough results such as the detection of gravitational waves, also in correspondence with photons, as well as the simultaneous observation of photons with a 300 TeV neutrino from an active galaxy.
The foundations of high energy astroparticle physics are shaken and new theoretical buildings are raised. These new conditions call for focused experimental and theoretical efforts, with careful planning of multi-wavelength and multi-messenger coordinated observation.
This school aims to provide the skills for this mission, in particular the cosmological, astronomical and particle physics background needed to be protagonist in this discussion.

The school will be organized with key lectures, plus a series of topical lectures and seminars. Guided exercises and hands-on sessions will take place throughout the school. A night of sky observations with the Asiago optical telescope is foreseen, weather permitting.
The school will be concluded with a final exam for evaluation. In case of a positive result of the exam, the school will assign a diploma with 6 Formative Credits (CFU).

Cosmic Ray Origin - beyond the standard models

One hundred years after their discovery great progress has been made in understanding the origin of the cosmic rays, but many questions remain. There is now convincing evidence for the long-suspected role of supernova remnants, but it is also clear that not all remnants contribute equally or at the same level throughout their evolution (and indeed there are questions about their overall efficiency as accelerators). In addition to supernova remnants there are strong hints that other categories of sources, such as pulsar wind nebulae, OB associations, GRBs etc, may contribute. This conference is being held to critically examine the possible contributions of various sources to the Galactic cosmic ray population and to suggest future lines of research.

The conference will take place at the Conference centre of San Vito di Cadore (Dolomites, Italy) from 18-24 September 2016.

There will be a mixture of invited reviews, contributed talks, poster presentations and discussion sessions allowing plenty of time for scientific debate and critical examination of the origin of cosmic rays in a stimulating environment.

100 years of Strong Gravity, 5 years of Gr@v

On November 25th 1915, Albert Einstein presented to the Prussian Academy of Sciences, in Berlin, a paper with title "Die Feldgleichungen der Gravitation", with the final form of his field equations. This concluded his formulation of the General Theory of Relativity, the relativistic theory of gravity, which revolutionized our understanding of space, time and the Universe.

To celebrate the centennial of General Relativity and simultaneously celebrate five years of the Gravitation Group at the University of Aveiro (Gr@v), established in the Fall 2010, Gr@v will organize a two days event, on 25-26 November 2015. This event will also mark the closing of the "Numerical Relativity and High Energy Physics" Marie Curie IRSES action, an international partnership which was coordinated by our group that ran over the period 2012-2015. Cosmic Ray International Seminar 2015

"The status and the future of the UHE Cosmic Ray Physics in the post LHC era"

CRIS is a well established series of topical conferences held every two years.

Initially devoted to the study of relativistic heavy ion collisions, since the fifth edition (2004) the CRIS Conferences have focused the problem of UHECRs in the region of the GZK cutoff.

Recent experimental data published by the Pierre Auger and Telescope Array Collaborations and their interpretation with the leading LHC-tuned shower models have stressed beyond any doubt the complexity of the field proving that obtaining more information on the composition of the cosmic rays will be crucial. Moreover, the interpretation of the UHECR cannot ignore the results at lower energy and the measurements done with other messengers like neutrinos and photons.

CRIS 2015, following the experience of the previous editions, aims to present overviews of existing data of UHECRs and reports from the main experiments currently taking data. At the same time overviews of theoretical models, with different hypotheses on the origin, on predictions for expected neutrino fluxes and related questions of interest in Cosmology will be presented.

Furthermore, the progress in cosmic ray physics from detectors in space and on the ground is expected to play a major role in the scientific program of CRIS 2015.

The Future of Research on Cosmic Gamma Rays

The future of the research with space-borne and ground-based experiments dedicated to the study of cosmic rays, especially gamma-rays, will be discussed, looking in particular to its potential for multi messenger astrophysics and for discoveries in the sector of physics in extreme conditions, and to new installations in the Northern and in the Southern hemispheres.

This workshop is done in La Palma, which hosts the Observatorio de Roque de Los Muchachos (ORM), where gamma-ray astrophysics is protagonist since the last 30 years, with HEGRA and MAGIC in particular. ORM is also one of the candidate sites for CTA North and the site where the prototype of the Large Size CTA Telescope (23 m) will be installed. New Worlds in Particle, Astroparticle and Cosmology

The “New Worlds in Particle, Astroparticle and Cosmology - 2014” workshop will be held in Braga (Universidade do Minho) on the 29th till the 31st January 2014.

These Workshops inherits the spirit of a long series of “New Worlds in Astroparticle Physics” workshops held, from 1996 to 2009. The idea was “bringing together, in an informal atmosphere, experimentalists and theorists in the joint field of Particle Physics and Astrophysics”. Time has evolved and the Portuguese scientific community in these fields has grown in number and above all in competence and responsibility but, the scientific and political challenges in a time frame of 10 years are enormous. The future, as always, had to be built! Hence we considered that it was the moment to organize a new series of workshops, now including explicitly “Particle Physics and Cosmology” and taking profit of the framework of the IDPASC network. Young senior scientists with a recognized scientific curriculum who wanted to contribute to the development and consolidation of these fields in Portugal are strongly encouraged to participate in the Workshop. The first of such Workshops was held in December 2012, in Lisbon (http://www.idpasc.lip.pt/course/view.php?id=58) and counted with the presence of several scientists. Encouraged by the this previous Workshop we decided to promote the “New Worlds in Particle, Astroparticle and Cosmology - 2014”.

Modified Gravity: Beyond Einstein Legacy

Gravity Theories extending General Relativity have attracted a great deal of interest since the advent of Einstein's theory. The first attempts sought to unify Gravitation and Electromagnetism and were followed by the search for a grand unified theory that would also merge the weak and strong nuclear forces. More recently, the previous endeavor has been augmented with the possibility that Modified Gravity might explain the current accelerated expansion of the Universe.

Indeed, relatively simple extensions to Einstein's General Relativity can deliver an accelerated Universe without resorting to the inclusion of exotic matter such as the cosmological constant or, in general terms, dark energy.

Numerous studies have been devoted to the investigation of issues such as extra-dimensions, variations of constants, …
